Delusional Politics
Looking out of my corner fourth-floor office with a full-frontal view, across First Avenue of the headquarters of the United Nations with the flags of the 193 member states fluttering majestically, I was reminded ever so often of what Bertrand Russell said: 'The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.' Many democratically elected leaders of the twenty-first century have displayed streaks of recklessness, megalomania, bizarre self-obsession and political views that are difficult to characterize. This book studies the actions of these contemporary political leaders and covers Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, the rise of the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and decision-making with respect to global governance, terrorism and trade. It brings to light the fact that at the heart of delusional politics is perhaps the delusional politician.

A Writer's Nightmare
The pick of thirty years of essays from R.K. Narayan, India’s greatest English language novelist. R.K. Narayan is perhaps better known as a novelist, but his essays are as delightful and enchanting as his stories and novels. Introducing this selection of essays, Narayan writes, ‘I have always been drawn to the personal essay in which you see something of the author himself apart from the theme. The scope for such a composition is unlimited—the mood may be somber, hilarious or satirical and the theme may range from what the author notices from his window to what he sees in his waste-paper basket to a world cataclysm.’ A Writer’s Nightmare is the marvelous result of Narayan likes for the personal essay. In the book, he tackles subjects such as weddings, mathematics, coffee, umbrellas, teachers, newspapers, architecture, monkeys, the caste system, lovers—all sorts of topics, simple and not so simple, which reveal the very essence of India.

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata:A Chronicle of His Life
The story of the life of one of the country's most influential industrialists and innovators. The chronicle of the life of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata is fascinating by reason of its impersonal approach, its old-world flavour and accent. It is for this reason that the publishers have not revised the text. The central protagonist of the chronicle can rank among the greatest pioneers of industrial enterprise of all time. In industrial matters he used 'a giant's strength like a giant'. His performance is unparalleled in India. Jamsetji Tata laid the foundations and largely consolidated the position of Indian industry and enterprise. In Indian industry the terms 'integrity' and 'Tata' are synonymous, with the result that the house of Tata and its far-flung organization have the stamp of stability, security and success. It was not an easy success and there is at no stage in its development any trace of the nouveau-rich make-up. Interesting Facts: A very well-researched biography. Set in the context of colonial India, it chronicles the story of a man who was unafraid to chart his own destiny for the fellow Indian citizen. Topics discussed in the book are relevant in the field of economics and commerce even today.

Tagore:A Novel
Tagore: A Novel is a fictionalized retelling of Rabindranath Tagore’s life and times. Sahitya Akademi awardee K.C. Ajayakumar unravels the mind of an incomparable visionary and genius in this book by exploring how the sensory impressions from Tagore’s early days shaped his creative ideation; how his boyhood experiences and beliefs reflected in his writings; how his complete and unapologetic immersion in everyday life played out against his lifelong obsession with death; and how his unbelievably multifaceted sensibility came alive through his literature, music, theatre and painting. This book not only examines the virtuosity of Tagore through his highly acclaimed works but also charts his rise to international fame and his friendship with William Rothenstein and William Butler Yeats. It presents an intimate account of his contentious relationships with Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sri Aurobindo, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, among others. Tagore’s ever-debated, ambivalent and enigmatic engagement with Mahatma Gandhi is also captured brilliantly in the book. His love for Shelaidaha, Patisar, Jorasanko Thakurbadi, Shantiniketan and the river Padma is portrayed beautifully. This is the story of a man like no other

Life Lessons from Lal Ded
ndia has produced some of the world’s greatest religious leaders, sages, saints, philosophers and spiritual thinkers. They were monks, nuns and renunciates, nationalists and reformers. No one religion had a monopoly on them. They range from Mahavira and Buddha, who lived over 2,500 years ago, to medieval saints like Chishti, Avvaiyar and Guru Nanak, to more recent philosophers and religious icons such as Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Saint Teresa and many others. The spiritual and philosophical heritage they left behind is India’s gift to all Indians and the world. In the ‘Life Lessons’ series we publish the essential teachings of some of India’s best-known spiritual teachers, along with commentaries and biographical notes. Each book will be a handy companion to help the reader along the difficult pathways of life. *** Lal Ded (Granny Lal), as Lalleshwari was known, was a Shaiva mystic saint who lived in Kashmir, probably in the fourteenth century. Born into a Brahmin family of Pandrethan (near Srinagar), she is said to have had an early bad marriage and faced many domestic hardships, prompting a turn to spirituality. She renounced her marriage and material life and became a wandering mystic. She shared her wisdom in the form of vaakhs (sayings or utterances). These vaakhs (originally in the Kashmiri language) have seeped far and wide into popular usage and are part of the collective memory—through songs, proverbs and hymns—of Kashmiris of all stripes, through the generations. In these vaakhs, Lal Ded talked about the woes of the human condition, her disillusionment with the world, her anguished search for God, and, ultimately, her realization of God as pure consciousness. She rejected outward rituals, ostentation and extreme asceticism as paths to reach the truth. Her observations on the transience and futility of material pursuits and the emotions they generate, like greed, anger, pride and fear, apply to us all. While her sayings are deeply profound, her humanism makes it easy to relate to Lal and her teachings. Translated and edited by Shonaleeka Kaul, the aphorisms in ‘Looking Within’ represent Lal Ded’s core teachings.

Amazing Secrets of Hinduism:Hindu Culture and Incr

The narrative is presented in the form of topics that focus on explaining key concepts such as Karma, Maya, Heaven and Hell; and questions such as ‘Who is a Hindu?’, ‘Why should I be a Hindu?’ and ‘What makes Hinduism great?’. This book is a must-read, especially for cynics, as the author invites readers to investigate and question everything in the book, since a true seeker will only search for truth.
