भाषा शिकण्याचा कंटाळा असणारी मुलंही या शिक्षिकेकडून आनंदाने संस्कृत शिकत. कारण ही शिक्षिका एकदम गोष्टीवेल्हाळ. या शिक्षिकेचं नांव कांचन वाटवे-जोशी. आजच्या मुलांच्या भावविश्वातली छोटीशी रसाळ गोष्ट रचत रचत कांचन त्यांना दरवेळी एकेका श्लोकाकडे घेऊन जाऊ लागली. दर आठवड्याला नवी गोष्ट वाचण्याची उत्सुकता माझ्यासह सर्व वाचकांना वाटू लागली. अनेक विद्यार्थी वाचकांना त्या श्लोककथा भावल्या. शाळांमध्ये बोर्डावर लावल्या जाऊ लागल्या. म्हणून या गोष्टी पुस्तकरुपाने प्रसिध्द करण्याचे ठरवले. बालकिशोर साहित्य कुणालाही आवडतं. या श्लोककथा फारच रोचक आहेत. त्या मनात रेंगाळतात, संस्कृत श्लोकांकडे नव्या नजरेतून बघायला लावतात. लहानपणी संस्कृत शिकत असताना एक गाणं पाठ केलं होतं- सुरससुबोधा विश्वमनोज्ञा, ललिता हृद्या रमणीया । अमृतवाणी संस्कृतभाषा, नैव क्लिष्टा न च कठिना ।। अशा या अमृतवाणीला कांचनने 'अतीव सरला, मधुर मंजुला' अशा रम्य गोष्टींचा साज चढवला आहे. हा एक अनोखा प्रयोग आहे, नवीन साहित्य-प्रकार आहे.
