आज एकविसाव्या शतकाच्या दुसऱ्या दशकात 'संवर्धन-जीवशास्त्र म्हणजेच 'कॉन्झर्व्हेशन बायोलॉजी' हि एक स्वतंत्र, बहुआयामी तरीही इतर विज्ञानशाखा स्वतःबरोबर जोडणारी, अशी विद्याशाखा म्हणून उदयाला येण्यामागेही दोनअडीचशे वर्षांपूर्वीपासून लागत गेलेले शोध,त्यानं वाढत गेलेली मनुष्यजातीची (निदान शास्त्रीय पातळीवरची) जाणीव, महायुद्धांसारख्या काही घटना हे सगळं कारणीभूत आहे. हा एका विज्ञानाचा इतिहास आहे. त्यामुळे यात प्राचीन भारताची निसर्ग राखण्याची परंपरा इत्यादी असा कुठलाही भाग विचरत घेतलेला नाही. विज्ञानाची मुलतत्व, निसर्ग-संरक्षण-संवर्धन यात कसकशी शिरली आणि त्यामुळे आज हि विद्याशाखा म्हणून कशी प्रस्थापित झाली आहे, याचा हा आढावा.
