Cryptonomicon
In 1942, Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse-mathematical genius and young Captain in the U.S. Navy - is assigned to detachment 2702. It is an outfit so secret that only a handful of people know it exists, and some of those people have names like Churchill and Roosevelt. The mission of Waterhouse and Detachment 2702-commanded by Marine Raider Bobby Shaftoe-is to keep the Nazis ignorant of the fact that Allied Intelligence has cracked the enemy's fabled Enigma code. It is a game, a cryptographic chess match between Waterhouse and his German counterpart, translated into action by the gung-ho Shaftoe and his forces. Fast-forward to the present, where Waterhouse's crypt-hacker grandson, Randy, is attempting to create a "data haven" in Southeast Asia - a place where encrypted data can be stored and exchanged free of repression and scrutiny. As governments and multinationals attack the endeavor, Randy joins forces with Shaftoe's tough-as-nails granddaughter, Amy, to secretly salvage a sunken Nazi submarine that holds the key to keeping the dream of a data haven afloat. But soon their scheme brings to light a massive conspiracy with its roots in Detachment 2702 linked to an unbreakable Nazi code called Arethusa. And it will represent the path to unimaginable riches and a future of personal and digital liberty...or to universal totalitarianism reborn. A breathtaking tour de force, and Neal Stephenson's most accomplished and affecting work to date, Cryptonomicon is profound and prophetic, hypnotic and hyper-driven, as it leaps forward and back between World War II and the World Wide Web, hinting all the while at a dark day-after-tomorrow. It is a work of great art, thought, and creative daring; the product of a truly icon.

Who Wrote the Bhagavadgita : A Secular Enquiry int
The Gita is an evolving response which deals with the conflicts between Veda and Vedanta and then with the challenge posed to Vedanta by Buddhism. Its shift to Bhakti is the climax of the battle between Brahmanism and Buddhism. There are probably multiple authors of the Gita as shown by stylistic changes and the frequent shift of subject matter. For Meghnad Desai, Gita is a secular text, a result of human creation over several centuries. He also contends that some themes in the Gita reinforce social inequality and lack of concern for the other and to that extent he finds Gita to be toxic.

The Land of Flying Lamas & Other Real Travel Stori
This is probably the only Indian travelogue of the Himalayas, which I loved reading. Gaurav Punj does not give you the Himalayas like you would have expected or read of or seen. He just gives you his version plain and simple and no frills attached. The Land of Flying Lamas is a charming book the sort that also is capable of calming the reader to a large extent. It is wistful and I felt I was there, in the mountains, sharing stories with people around me and sipping my cup of tea. Punj speaks of treks and the life in neighbouring areas. A book that will satisfy the soul for sure.

Bol Bam : Approaches to Shiva
Faith remains strong, even in the midst of devastation. We are stimulated daily by constant reminders of God around us, says Scharada Dubey. There are the daily calls to prayer, devotional songs, calendar pictures, roadside shrines but it is pilgrimages that are the most visible way in which faith is expressed. A yatra is essentially a shared spiritual journey and the writer has undertaken many of her own, particularly to places central to the worship of Shiva. To some, choice seemed an odd one, since there are many reasons for non-belief today but Dubey chooses not to turn her back on such cultural riches. Large numbers of people move across the country in obedience to the rhythm of a seasonal call that their forefathers have answered. This book seeks to explore several such yatras through the particular prism of Shiva worship. Shiva occupies a unique place in the Hindu pantheon as a deity equally close to the hearts of vagrants and addicts, the disabled and the no hopers and to the more empowered sections of society. Perceptions of Shiva and of his worshippers provide the conversational cues for interviews with the people whose accounts and words enrich this book. In it, readers will meet pilgrims and priests, public administrators and all mainstream or marginal participants in journeys undertaken to please their god. Dubey joins the throng around Shiva, observing, listening, absorbing the deep, quiet enchantment of faith.

A Little Mayhem
According to official records, a girl is raped in India every twenty-two minutes. Unofficial estimates put it at more like one every five minutes. That was just a statistic to me. Until they raped and killed my little sister. The police dont want to pursue the case the media blame her and the men who killed her walk free. Its time men like them learn that they can no longer get away with it. Its time they learn the meaning of fear. Its time they learn that a woman need not just beg and plead for her dignity she can fight and kill for it.I am just an ordinary woman but sometimes all it takes to get the ball rolling is for one person to create a little mayhem.
