गेल्या पाचशे वर्षांत उत्तर हिंदुस्थानात जे घडू शकले नाही; ते दक्षिण हिंदुस्थानात घडवून दाखवावे आणि सदाचाराच्या, संस्कृतीच्या ह्या रानटी वैऱ्यांना त्यांच्या उन्मत्त सिंहासनावरून तंगडी धरून खाली खेचावे अशी प्रचंड महत्त्वाकांक्षा शिवाजी महाराजांनी अन् त्यांच्या सवंगड्यांनी आपल्या सिंह-हृदयात धरली होती. पुरुष प्रयत्नांची पराकाष्ठा मांडली होती. हजारो अडचणींच्या व संकटांच्या अग्नीप्रलयातही उसळत्या ज्वालेवर स्वार होऊन शिवाजी महाराज व त्यांचे सवंगडी छातीवर मूठ आपटीत बजावीत होते, ‘पृथ्वीचा भार नाहीसा करण्यासाठीच आम्ही जन्माला आलेलो आहोत. आमच्या मायभूमीचे संरक्षण करणे आमचे आद्यकर्तव्य आहे. अन् ते बजावण्यास आम्ही कधीही कसूर करणार नाही!!! आता नव्या मराठी रणनीतीचे सूत्र ‘आक्रमण’ असेच राहील! केवळ संरक्षण म्हणून नव्हे!’ म्हणूनच तर भारताच्या श्रेष्ठ पुरुषांमधे शिवाजी महाराजांची गणना होते. शिवाजी महाराज हे जितके निष्ठावंत तितकेच कर्तव्यनिष्ठ होते. ते मुत्सद्दी सेनानायक होते. त्यांनी आपल्या समाजापुढे हे एकच ध्येय ठेवले होते. अन् ह्या ध्येयासाठी लढणे आणि प्राणत्याग करणे कसे श्रेयस्कर व आवश्यक आहे ते त्यांनी आपल्या सहकाऱ्यांना पटवून स्वराज्याची स्थापना केली. एका थोर इतिहास-संशोधकाने आपल्या ऐतिहासिक लेखात म्हटले आहे की,“साऱ्या जगातील अहिंदू शक्तींशी व शत्रूंशी त्या काळी एकटा हिंदू महाराष्ट्रच झुंजला! शिवाजी महाराजांचे व्यक्तिमत्त्व अन् त्यांच्या चरित्रातील संदेश यांची गतकाळात जेवढी गरज होती तेवढीच ती आजही आहे. ”छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांचे जिवाभावाचे सवंगडी त्यांच्या धैर्य, शौर्य व आत्मसमर्पणाने मराठी माणसाला माहीत झालेले आहेत. छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांच्या बरोबरच हिंदवी स्वराज्याची प्रतिज्ञा करून अनेक लढवय्ये धारातीर्थी पतन पावले. महाराष्ट्राच्या परदास्य विमोचनाची महान कामगिरी ह्या सवंगड्यांनी घरदार, शेतीवाडी इतकेच नव्हे तर प्रसंगी प्राणार्पणाने केली. देहाचा बळी दिला, स्वतःच्या रक्ताचा अभिषेक केला. हिंदवी स्वराज्याचा इतिहास असा बलिदानाने घडला आहे. देवासाठी, धर्मासाठी, स्वराज्यासाठी आणि राजासाठी स्वतःच्या प्राणांचा नैवेद्य अर्पिला. महाराजांच्या अनेक साथीदारांनी स्वराज्यासाठी आपल्या आयुष्याच्या मशाली पेटविण्याचे (जणू सतीचे) वाण घेतले होते. त्या काळातील अशा वीराग्रणींची नामावली फारच मोठी आहे. पण असे अगणित पुरुषसिंह ह्या महाराष्ट्राच्या गडागडावर, दऱ्याखोऱ्यात, घाटीखिंडीत लढता लढता मरण पावले आहेत. त्यांची नावे-गावेच काय पण त्यांची एकूण संख्यादेखील इतिहासाला ठाऊक नाही. परंतु इतके मात्र निश्चितच की त्यांच्या ह्या बलिदानामुळेच स्वराज्य मिळाले अन् स्वराज्य वाढले! असे वीर शिवरायांचे शिलेदार फिरंगोजी नरसाळे यांची गाथा
