हार्पर ली या अमेरिकन लेखिकेची मुख्य ओळख एकाच रचनेमुळे जगप्रसिद्ध झालेली लेखिका अशी आहे. टु किल अ मॉकिंगबर्ड हीच ती अजरामर कलाकृती होय. ली यांच्या या कादंबरीचा विद्यागौरी खरे यांनी केलेला प्रस्तूत अनुवाद प्रकाशित करून मनोविकास प्रकाशनाने मराठी साहित्यविश्‍वाच्या समृद्धीत मोलाची भर घातली आहे. वसाहतवादावर पोसलेल्या सर्व युरोपियन राष्ट्रांना मागे टाकून अमेरिकेने विसाव्या शतकात पहिल्या क्रमांकावर झेप घेतली यात वाद नाही. परंतु या घोडदौडीत अफ्रिकन कृष्णवर्णीय गुलामांचे फार मोठ्या प्रमाणावर शोषण झाले ही वस्तुस्थिती आहे. असे असले तरी, अमेरिकेतीलच एक समूह निग्रोंच्या न्याय्य हक्कांसाठी कार्यरत राहिला आणि त्याने त्यासाठी गृहयुद्धाचाही धोका पत्करला. ही एक प्रकारची रुपेरी कडा होय. महात्मा जोतीराव फुले यांनी आपली ‘गुलामगिरी’ ही कृती या समूहातील न्यायप्रिय योद्ध्यांना अर्पण केली. ...तरीही वंशश्रेष्ठत्त्वाचा हा गंड अमेरिकन मानसिकतेचा जणू हिस्सा बनला. गेल्या शतकातील साठच्या दशकात हा प्रश्‍न परत एकदा ऐरणीवर आला होता. मार्टिन ल्यूथर किंगसारखे नेते यातूनच पुढे आले. याच रणधुमाळीत केनेडी बंधूंची कसोटी लागली. हार्पर ली यांची ही कादंबरी याच वातावरणात प्रसिद्ध झाली आणि गाजली. ऑटिकस फिंच या वकिलाच्या कुटुंबाला केंद्रस्थानी ठेऊन लिहिलेली ही कादंबरी ऑटिकसच्या स्काऊट या निरागस पण स्मार्ट मुलीच्या निवेदनातून ती आकाराला येते. यातील वंशवाद तसा खास अमेरिकन असला, तरी विद्यागौरी खरे यांनी म्हटल्याप्रमाणे आपला समाज, आपले शेजारी ह्यांचा विचार करायला शिकवणारे हे पुस्तक एकमेकांपासून तुटत चाललेल्या आत्मकेंद्री आणि स्वार्थी वृत्तीने पछाडलेल्या आपल्या समाजाकरता फार आवश्यक आहे. आपल्याच भाऊबंदांनी चालवलेल्या कृष्णवर्णीयांच्या शोषणाविरूद्ध उभ्या ठाकलेल्या वकिलाची ही कहाणी असली तरी हा वकील एक आदर्श पालक आहे. आपल्या कृत्यांचे नैतिक परिणाम विशेषत: आपल्या मुलांवर काय होतील याचा विचार करूनच पुढे पाऊल टाकणारा तो एक जबाबदार व प्रगल्भ नागरिक आहे. कादंबरीतील किशोरवयीन व प्रौढ पात्रांचा समतोल लेखिकेने खूप कौशल्याने सांभाळला आहे. अलीकडे मूल्यशिक्षणाची चर्चा नेहमी ऐकू येत असते. या दृष्टीने पाहिले तर ही कृती मूल्यशिक्षणासाठी एक उत्कृष्ट पाठ्यपुस्तक ठरावी. - सदानंद मोरे 1961 मध्ये पुलित्झर पुरस्कार प्राप्त कादंबरी आणि त्यानंतर या पुस्तकावर आधारित चित्रपटाला अकॅडमी अवॉर्डने गौरविण्यात आले. हा चित्रपट पुस्तकाप्रमाणेच देखील अभिजात कलाकृती म्हणून गणला जातो.
