दुसऱ्या महायुद्धात वीस लाख हिंदुस्तानी सैनिक लढले. जेथे जेथे ब्रिटिश युद्धात उतरले, तेथे तेथे हिंदुस्तानी सैन्य जाऊन पोचले. फ्रान्स आणि ग्रीसपासून ते मलायापर्यंत त्यांनी जर्मन, इटालियन आणि जपानी फौजांविरुद्ध निकराचा लढा दिला. असे असूनही भारताच्या इतिहासात या सैनिकांना स्थान नाही. आपण भारतीय त्यांना स्वत:च्या भूतकाळाचा भाग मानत नाही. भारतीय भाषांमधील साहित्य त्यांची दखल घेत नाही. भारतीय चित्रपटसृष्टी कधीही त्यांच्या जीवन-मरणाचे चित्रण पडद्यावर आणत नाही. दोस्त राष्ट्रांनी जसे त्यांना अनुल्लेखाने मारले, तसेच आपणसुद्धा त्यांना विस्मृतीच्या पडद्याआड ढकलून मोकळे झालो. हिंदुस्तानी सैनिकांनी इम्फाळ-कोहिमामध्ये बलदंड जपान्यांना धूळ चारली म्हणून हिंदुस्तान जपानी साम्राज्याच्या पकडीत सापडला नाही. अन्यथा केवळ हिंदुस्तानचाच नाही, तर संपूर्ण जगाचा चेहरा-मोहरा बदलला असता. जपानी हिंदुस्तानात घुसले असते, तर तिकडे जर्मनी, इटली यांचेही बळ वाढले असते आणि नाझी भस्मासुराने हिंदुस्तानातही पाय रोवले असते. तसे होऊ नये म्हणून ज्यांनी जिवाचे रान केले, प्राण गमावले, अशा अज्ञात वीरांची ही कथा.
