George bernard shaw (1856-1950) was the son of a civil servent born in dublin. He established himself as a leading music and theatre critic in the eighties & nineties and become a well known member of the fabian society, for which he composed many pamphlets. his earliast dramas were called appropriately plays pleasent & unpleasent (1898) . another famous play of shaw was saint joan (1923) in which he rewrites the wel known story of the french maiden and extends it from the middle ages to the present
