‘‘वीरजी, शाईची बाटलीये ना ही?’’ अमरकौरने विचारलं. ‘‘माती आहे ती!’’ ‘‘पण लाल दिसतेय’’ ‘‘हो, तिच्यात मिसळलेल्या रक्तामुळे. अमृतसरला जालियनवाला बागेत सभेसाठी जमलेल्या लोकांवर ब्रिटिशांनी गोळ्या झाडल्या. त्यांच्या रक्ताने सगळं मैदान लाल झालं होतं. त्या मैदानावरची माती आहे ही!’’ मग भगतसिंग आणि अमरकौर यांनी देशबांधवांचं रक्त मिसळलेल्या त्या मातीला कळ्या वाहिल्या. भगतसिंग मनातल्या मनात म्हणाला, ‘शपथ या मातीची! आम्हाला गुलामगिरीत जखडणार्‍यांना आम्ही इथून हाकलून लावू! जालियनवाला बागेतल्या शहिदांचं बलिदान मी व्यर्थ जाऊ देणार नाही!’ ही शपथ घेतली, तेव्हा भगतसिंग जेमतेम बारा वर्षांचा होता. आज आपल्याला घेता येणार्‍या प्रत्येक मोकळ्या श्वासासाठी अनेक लहान-मोठ्या, सामान्य-असामान्य भारतीयांनी फार मोठी किंमत मोजली आहे; स्वतःचं आयुष्य अक्षरशः पणाला लावलं आहे; जीव ओवाळून टाकला आहे. मात्र त्यांनी आपल्याला दिलेला हा वारसा केवळ हौतात्म्याचा नाही, तर मूल्यांचा आणि विचारीपणाचासुद्धा आहे, याची पक्की खूणगाठ आपण मनाशी बांधायला हवी.
